Hanging on a Whim is a retail shop and art studio featuring hand-painted furniture, original canvases, children’s hand-painted furniture, tile and glasswork, art classes, custom orders and so much more!
The store was first established as an art studio and retail shop 15 years ago in Hampden. It was the dream of Brenda Carroll to fill the space with hand-painted furniture, and original canvases from the whimsical and child-oriented to the more sophisticated. In addition to furniture and paintings, she also painted children’s furniture such as small rockers, tables, and chairs, toy boxes, etc. Customers began coming back for the originality Brenda offered. Always looking for new ways to expand her art, she began decorating functional furnishings such as tables in tile and glass and creating original tile and glassworks for hanging.
It wasn’t long before Brenda was offering custom orders for everything from dressers, tables, and chairs, to coffee tables, side tables and everything in between. Her following knows that she can breathe new life into furniture and give it a new look.
To round out the art offerings, Brenda buys creative home furnishings to provide her customers with other gifts to purchase for birthdays, showers, house warming and the like. Hanging on a Whim offers creative jewelry, fashion scarves, and a soap line as well as other personal accessory lines. She purchases in small quantities and she varies what she carries as a way of always keeping the shop fresh and exciting for her customers.
While Brenda used her studio to paint furniture for her shop and custom following, it wasn’t long before she welcomed students to share her studio space. She teaches students from beginner to advanced and is able to effectively teach students in a variety of projects simultaneously!
After leaving Hampden, she has moved to Timonium to share space with other vendors in a shared space called Home Again. While Brenda is the resident artist, you’ll find interesting new and gently used furnishings and accessories for every room in your home.
